Students at the Work Opportunity Center (W.O.C.) in  Minneapolis have focused on conflict resolution in their classroom. Their teacher, Lori DuPont, took students to Intermedia Arts, in Uptown, to view a photography exhibit about the Rwandan Genocide. They dialogued with the exhibit’s photographer, Paul Corbett Brown. Brown and the students discussed topics such as, “How did the people victimized by the genocide go on with their lives?” “How can one continue on when such tragedy occurs?” “How is choosing peace possible or impossible?” “How would choosing understanding or co-existence make things different on a global level? On a local level? In families? On the street?”

By exploring these questions, both in light of tragedies abroad as well as at home in Minneapolis, the students thought critically about the change that they would like to see in their neighborhoods and how the community could use art and community service to impact their world in a positive way. By focusing on change within their own community, the students hope to take Gandhi’s advice and “Be the change you wish to see for the world.”

The students also participated in an activity lead by The Advocates’ staff that posed the question, “Where will you be in five years?” The students transmitted their plan through words or illustration. The W.O.C. is currently working with an artist in residence, Andrea Lehmann, to create a video about their school year.
